*This document is to be found in the most antient book of the Scottish Records, which is called, in an inventary of its contents," The Black Buik." It teaches so far back as the 15th year of the reign of David, King of Scotland, and ends in June 1385. This treaty laid the basis of the future impignoration and final union of Orkney to Scotland, by stipulating the payment of a tribute from Scotland, called "the annual of Norway;" and, in connection with subsequent treaties and acts of Parliament, it explains the origin and continuance of the local peculiarities which still subsist, and which are to be ascribed to the antient connection of Orkney with Norway. The "Black Buik," from which this treaty is taken, is thus described in Mr Robertson's Parliamentary Records of Scotland, in the General Register House, Edinburgh, Vol. I. p. 79.
