In placing this Catalogue of my stock of PERIODICALS, TRANSACTIONS OF LEArned SOCIETIES, and ISSUES FROM PRIVATE PRESSES before my Customers, I would draw their attention to the extreme intricacy of this department of the Book-Trade. In spite of my numerous occupations, I devote an especial care to this very laborious but important branch of Literature, and recommend my services to Librarians of PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS to complete their imperfect sets of Publications coming under the above heading. A careful examination of the present Catalogue will show the marvellous extent of PERIODICAL LITERATURE, the results of which are the present advanced state of European and American civilization. It may be surmised, that American Libraries are weaker than the old European Libraries in the possession of perfect sets of the Learned Transactions. I therefore recommend this Catalogue especially to American Librarians. The amount of patient labour and industry bestowed upon the collecting and cataloguing of the works here advertised has been considerable, and I trust that it may be compensated by a liberal patronage. BERNARD QUARITCH. Invitation to subscribe to a valuable new work on THE ART MONUMENTS OF SOUTHERN ITALY, from the 4th to the 13th Century. SALAZARO, STUDI SUI MONUMENTI DELL' ITALIA MERIDIONALE dal 40. al 130. Secolo, imperial folio, with 60 magnificent plates, executed partly in Chromolithography, partly Photographic, to be published in 30 Dispense, each containing three sheets of text and two plates, and priced 15 shillings. Napoli, 1872 Uniform with the "CASE di POMPEI" of NICOLINI. Mr. Demetrio Salazaro is the Inspector of the National Museum of Naples, and has long been engaged upon the subject of this very important work. It was till recently the opinion of most critics, based upon the dictum of Vasari, that Italian Art began its existence with Cimabue and Giotto, towards the commencement of the Fourteenth Century. However, more diligent and accurate researches, promoted by German scholarship, and carried out to their fullest extent by Mr. Salazaro himself, have established that a regular School of Italian Art, not indeed displaying the perfected beauty and grace that are seen in the productions of the fourteenth century, but still marked by the gradual growth and development of the artistic ideal, existed in Southern Italy before the days of Cimabue, and was the genuine parent of that later culture which reached its highest grandeur in Da Vinci, Michel Angelo, and Raffaelle. To the illustration of this subject, as exemplified in the Art-monuments of the country executed between the fourth and the thirteenth centuries, the magnificent work above mentioned has been undertaken. As the first great essay of its kind, the importance and value of the "Monumenti dell'Italia Meridionale" must be obvious to every amateur and student of the History of Art.
