DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR AND RELATED HEARINGS BEFORE A SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE UNITED STATES SENATE NINETY-SECOND CONGRESS SECOND SESSION ON AN ACT MAKING APPROPRIATIONS FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF 72-817 O Printed for the use of the Committee on Appropriations PART 1 U.S. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE WASHINGTON: 1972 DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR AND RELATED AGENCIES APPROPRIATIONS FOR FISCAL YEAR 1973 WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1972 SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS, U.S. SENATE, Washington, D.C. The subcommittee met at 10 a.m. in room 1114, New Senate Office Building, Hon. Alan Bible (chairman) presiding. Present: Senators Bible, Stevens, Boggs, and Hatfield. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR STATEMENT OF ROGERS C. B. MORTON, THE SECRETARY ACCOMPANIED BY: WILLIAM T. PECORA, UNDER SECRETARY RICHARD F. BODMAN, ASSISTANT SECRETARY JOHN W. LARSON, ASSISTANT SECRETARY RICHARD R. HITE, DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY COMMITTEE PROCEDURE Mr. BIBLE. The hearing will come to order. This is the time that we are starting our examination of the regular appropriations for the Department of Interior and related agencies for fiscal year 1973. This subcommittee will examine estimates for all of the bureaus and agencies of the Department of the Interior except the Bureau of Reclamation, the Power Marketing Agencies, and research on underground power transmission. These agencies, although they actually are a part of the Department of the Interior, will be considered in the public works appropriation bill. There also are included in this bill estimates for activities actually in other departments and independent agencies. These include the Forest Service and the Indian Health Service, as well as the Smithsonian Institution and other agencies. We are getting a fairly early start in the hearings. It's my plan to complete hearings, to get the markup, and then to final congressional action as soon as possible and consistent with passage of the act on the House side. BUDGET ESTIMATES The fiscal year 1973 estimates included in the Department of the Interior and related agencies appropriations bill amount to $2,700, |
